In our L3 literacy groups time there are 'must do' activities and 'can do' activities. A couple of students in Rosella completed everything this morning, so they had a little time to create some animations of their choice with the 'Play School Art Maker' app. Please have a look at these wonderful beach animations created by Duncan and Kodi.

It's been all about whales this week! Rosella could not believe how big the Blue Whale is. It's the largest animal on land or sea in the world, its heart alone is the size of a small car. Wow! Whale, krill and mammals have been Rosella's passwords this week and we have also enjoyed lots of stories about whales.
Here are some of the YouTubes we have enjoyed in class this week. We have learnt lots of interesting things about whales.
Well done to our two students this week who reached 125 nights of home reading. A great effort! Wonderful news with another three students reaching 150 nights of home reading this week. A fabulous effort!
It's National Science Week and we are all enjoying this term's science unit 'What's It Made Of'. Our science lesson today was about making sense of a variety of materials. We all chose a different item to write about and describe. Our work was recorded in our science journal.
Making Sense of Materials from Sue Dowling on Vimeo. In Maths today Rosella revisited length and we were given a piece of streamer. Our task was to move around the classroom to find as many objects as we could that were longer than, or shorter than, our streamer. Firstly we had to make some guesses, or estimations, about what objects we thought would be longer, taller or shorter than our streamer. Then it was time for action! We were careful to put the two lengths side by side to compare, always lining up on one side to make sure we were measuring correctly. Our streamers also curled up, so we had to straighten them to measure correctly. We recorded our findings in our maths journal. We were so clever that at the end of maths time we lined up our streamers, side by side (aligned along the edge of the mat) to compare their length. We lined them up from shortest to longest. This was tricky, it took a lot of talking, moving, swapping and changing where our streamers were, but we worked it out in the end!
Rosella had great fun creating short animations using the Play School Art Maker iPad app this morning in L3 groups. It was the first time we had used this app and we had to create a scene with some sea animals and Rainbow Fish features in some of our animations too! We went to the back of our classroom to record our voices, but discovered in some cases there was still quite a bit of background noise! We were very clever and had to follow a couple of steps to export our video from this app to the camera roll of our iPads. A great job Rosella!
Today Rosella enjoyed their ‘I Wonder Who Wednesday’ morning after clues were revealed to the class yesterday about this week's mystery reader. Again lots of excitement in anticipation of who it could be! Our mystery reader entertained Rosella today with the funny and heart-warming book 'The Best Birthday Present Ever' by Ben Mantle. This story about Bear and Squirrel reminded us that friendship is a great gift. Thanks so much to one of our mums who volunteered to be Rosella's mystery reader today. There was a very proud daughter in Rosella today! We wonder who will visit us next week? In 'Kinder Time Together' today we had a very special visitor to the Kinder rooms. Nan nan kindly came to speak to us about what life was like in Helensburgh when she was a young child, just like we are now. Nan nan is the great grandmother of two of our Kindergarten friends and she went to Helensburgh PS just like us! Life was very different for children back then compared to us now. Children picked fruit on the way to school to eat for their recess and they brought their lunch to school in a brown paper bag. Nan nan didn't wear shoes to school back then, as did lots of the children at school. She had one pair of shoes that she saved for Sunday school and special occasions. Milk was delivered to school and left outside the classroom; it was often very warm when the children got around to drinking it! Children who did not behave at school were made to sit in the naughty corner and it was very embarrassing. After school nan nan always had chores to complete before going out to play with her friends. It was wonderful to have nan nan speak to us all today and give us an insight to what life was like at our school and in Helensburgh back then. We have been comparing children's lives in the past to the present as part of our history unit this term. Thank you nan nan for visiting us today. Today Rosella made some very special fish in L3 groups time. We were inspired to give our gorgeous fish a name and we wanted to introduce them to you! Please read what we wrote about our fish today in our online flippable book.
Well done to our student who reached 100 nights of home reading. A great effort! Exciting news with our first student to reach 150 nights of home reading this week. How fantastic is this! We are so proud of all our Rosella children for the effort they put into their home reading each week and thanks to our parents for their fabulous support.
A glorious day weather wise and Kinder sport was a great start to the school day.
Kinder Sport August 11, 2017 from Sue Dowling on Vimeo. Congratulations to our Rosella Achievement Award recipients announced at today's K-6 Assembly. We are very proud of you! (Our other award winner was sadly away sick today.)
Yes . . . that is a very good question! Rosella as part of their position work in maths this week have been learning about left and right. We have danced, sung, moved around to learn our left from our right and we really like this song that can be viewed below. Please sing and move along with us to this robot song at home. Don't forget the fist pumps!
In L3 groups this morning Rosella chose a plaster sea animal to paint at the standing table. They look fabulous!
Rosella used the 'Drawing Pad' iPad app for the first time in L3 groups this morning to recreate a scene from 'The Rainbow Fish' story we have recently enjoyed. We inserted a sea background, used the sticker tool to insert two of the characters that help Rainbow Fish in this story - the starfish and the wise octopus. We then drew a beautiful rainbow fish to complete the picture. We saved their creations to the camera roll on the iPad and then uploaded our pictures to our journal on Seesaw. Well done Rosella!
