Our special homework is to use cups and containers in the bath or shower; pour, compare and most of all have lots of fun!
Rosella continued our investigation of capacity today. We watched 'Which container holds more magic rocks?' with Flynn and Dodley. It was then time for us to do some hands on research ourselves. We rotated around tables using water, beans and stones to fill a variety of different sized containers. We experimented with filling our containers to the top, half filling them and emptying them. We compared the capacities of two containers by filling one and pouring into the other. We used smaller sized containers to fill larger containers. We practised pouring carefully so containers didn't overflow. (Oops, sometimes they did!) Overall we had lots of fun and used lots of mathematical language too. Please view the slideshow below of us in action this afternoon. There is also a link to Flynn and Dodley below if you'd like to watch it again at home.

In measurement in maths today Rosella looked at the size of different containers and how much water they could hold. (Yes - that new, tricky word capacity.) We worked out that there is no way an elephant would be able to have a bath in our bathtub at home. It could never hold enough water! We also worked out that filling a blow-up swimming pool with water would be much faster using a large bucket rather than a plastic cup. We also had a think about what would hold more water than our drink bottles and we recorded our answers in our Maths Journal. Great work Rosella! |
