Rosella Hefting from Sue Dowling on Vimeo.
Today in maths Rosella compared the mass of two objects by holding one in each hand and using our bodies to balance each object. Lots of hefting, noise, fun and learning!

Rosella began investigating the concept of mass in maths today and how heavy and light objects are. Our first task was to find some objects in the classroom that we thought were lighter and heavier than Mrs Dowling's drink bottle. We did a great job!
We discovered that we could compare the weight of two objects by holding them in each hand and balancing - hefting. However, Mrs Dowling tried to trick us. She gave us a pom pom that was larger than one of our marbles. We discovered the smaller marble was heavier! Next we held a large ball we use for sport and compared it to a small yellow 'ball' we had never seen before. This mysterious small ball was a lot heavier! It was a shot put! So when you are comparing how heavy something is, we found out that bigger does not always mean heavier!
We passed the shot put around (very carefully) because we all wanted to hold it. We couldn't believe how heavy it was.
We worked on sorting some pictures of objects together on the floor and then sorted some independently in our maths journal.
We all had a turn sorting objects on our Smartboard.
We finished off today with a big laugh watching Ernie and Bert investigate mass. Poor Bert!
