This was the name of Rosella's science lesson today. We worked in teams this afternoon to investigate if a collection of objects we were given were waterproof or not. It was time to roll up our sleeves and get started. We discussed what we observed with our group and then shared our findings with the class. We recorded our results in our science journals.
Here is an activity below that you can play and enjoy at home. Place the objects in the tester and predict if you think it will be waterproof. Click on the lever and see if you were correct. Try the quiz too!
We used white air dry clay to create our own rainbow fish today. We found that the clay felt quite sticky at first, but we soon discovered how quickly clay dries out when you work with it. We embedded sequins in our fish to give it a special 'rainbow sparkle'! Our fish have been set aside to dry and we will post photos when they have dried completely. Here is a sneak peek! (To our classmates who were away sick today - your friends helped make a sparkly fish for you too.)
Rosella had a maths problem to solve today. Twelve sea animals had to be shared equally between four aquarium tanks. How many animals could they put in each tank? We used the 'Feltboard' iPad app to help us solve the problem. We uploaded our work from the camera roll on the iPad to our Seesaw Journal. Great work Rosella! Today Rosella enjoyed their ‘I Wonder Who Wednesday’ morning after clues were revealed to the class yesterday about this week's mystery reader. We wondered who it could be! Our mystery reader today was the grandma of one of our students and sadly this classmate was not well today and absent from school. However, our mystery reader was still very happy to come in and read to Rosella this morning. Rosella was entertained today with the very funny book 'There Was An Old Bloke Who Swallowed a Chook' by P. Crumble. Lots and lots of giggles with this very Aussie rhyming story that becomes more and more ridiculous as the story goes on! Our grandma also read one of her favourite poems to us 'My Shadow' by Robert Louis Stevenson which we enjoyed very much. Our grandma also kindly stayed on speak to us about what life was like at school when she was a young child, just like we are now. Life at school was very different for children back then compared to us now. Our grandma told us lots of interesting things about her school including: * It was a small school that only had an asphalt playground and no oval. They had to walk to a local oval for sport. * Speaking of sport, the girls were not allowed to play soccer like they are now. * The classroom wasn't very colourful or pretty like ours. * When you moved on to Year 1 you had to sit in rows at wooden desks and write with ink. You had to be careful because you couldn't rub out a mistake. Sometimes children were naughty and dunked girls' pigtail in the ink well. * Lunch was wrapped in wax paper and then wrapped in a tea towel with a drink. * They had a very small canteen at school and because there wasn't a lot of money you ordered your lunch once a week as a special treat. There was a fish and chip shop close by that you could order from too. * Milk was delivered every morning and left under the big tree, but it was often warm by the time you were allowed to drink it. * Grandma caught a bus to school and the trip cost 2 pennies. * There were no big excursions like we have, only visits to local areas as bus trips were too expensive. * There were no Smartboards, computers or iPads. * There was no hall. * The was no before or after school care as mums didn't work outside the home. * You had to behave a school becasue if you were naughty you had to stand in the corner at the back of the room with your back turned. Sometimes the teacher threw a duster at you! * Grandma's favourite subjects were reading, writing and singing. * School uniforms did not have sloppy joes or jackets like today, only knitted jumpers. * Grandma had two pairs of shoes, her school shoes and a plastic pair. When you arrived home you polished your school shoes and these were for going out too. It was wonderful that our grandma spent this time with us today to give us an insight to what life was like at school for her. We have been comparing children's lives in the past to the present as part of our history unit this term. Thank you so much for visiting us today. We look forward to another visit when your grandson is well and back at school with us. Now . . . we wonder who will visit us next week? Well done to our student who reached 100 nights of home reading this week. A great effort! Another two of our students reached 150 nights of home reading this week. What a fabulous effort!
We had four birthdays to celebrate in 'Kinder Time Together' today, including one Rosella friend. We celebrated with singing, a special certificate and book mark. Happy birthday!
Rosella walked down Postman's Track today to post our invitations to our Grandparents for Grandparents' Day. We have worked on our invitations over the last couple of weeks and we can hardly wait until we receive a reply from our Grandparents. We hope they are able to come to watch our performance and also visit our classroom on Grandparents' Day on Thursday 14th of September. Thanks so much to our parents for sending in all the envelopes so promptly so we could post our invitations today.
Mrs Fuller came to watch us at the parade today and kindly took this photo of us all as we were walking to the hall. Here is a video of us parading too!
Who were all the wonderful book characters that Rosella chose to dress up as today for our Book Week Parade? We never miss an opportunity to write in class, so please read all about our characters in our latest online flippable book.
How fantastic was our Book Week Parade today? Rosella looked gorgeous of course as they paraded today in front of all the school, family and friends. Thanks so much mums, dads and grandparents for helping with the children's wonderful costumes. They loved being dressed up and really got into the personality of their character today as you can see in our photos! If you were able to make it this afternoon, we hope you enjoyed seeing all our children at HPS at the parade. Here are some photos and video of Rosella today in their private photo shoot first off this morning!
Today Rosella enjoyed their ‘I Wonder Who Wednesday’ morning after clues were revealed to the class yesterday about this week's mystery reader. We wondered who it could be! Our mystery reader read the gorgeous book 'Noni the Pony' by Alison Lester today. This is a lovely story about Noni and her friends and how they enjoy life and always look out for each other. Thanks so much to one of our mums who volunteered to be Rosella's mystery reader today. There was a very proud daughter in Rosella today! We wonder who will visit us next week? The Children's Book Council of Australia announced the Book of the Year winners yesterday and in the 'Early Childhood' category the winner was 'Go Home, Cheeky Animals!' with the Honour books being 'Nannie Loves' and 'Gary'. Rosella have been reading the shortlisted books from the Early Childhood category in library time this term. For all the winners in all the different categories please visit here. This marks the beginning of 'Book Week'. It's time to put the finishing touches to our costumes for our 'Book Week Parade' this Thursday!
As posted yesterday Rosella have enjoyed the book 'The Snail and the Whale' this week. After three readings and a conversation about this text with Mrs Fuller, children wrote independently and freely. Their responses have now been published in our online book. A wonderful effort Rosella!
This week Rosella have enjoyed the book 'The Snail and the Whale' by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. It has proven an inspiration for our writing and also for our craft work. Yesterday in L3 groups time we painted our egg carton for our whale's body and today we completed our whale and then made a small snail out of plasticine. Our snails are now happily riding on our whales' tails, just like in the story! |
