Life was very different for children back then compared to us now. Children picked fruit on the way to school to eat for their recess and they brought their lunch to school in a brown paper bag. Nan nan didn't wear shoes to school back then, as did lots of the children at school. She had one pair of shoes that she saved for Sunday school and special occasions. Milk was delivered to school and left outside the classroom; it was often very warm when the children got around to drinking it! Children who did not behave at school were made to sit in the naughty corner and it was very embarrassing. After school nan nan always had chores to complete before going out to play with her friends.
It was wonderful to have nan nan speak to us all today and give us an insight to what life was like at our school and in Helensburgh back then. We have been comparing children's lives in the past to the present as part of our history unit this term. Thank you nan nan for visiting us today.
